Transforming a legacy website into a modern operational and historical platform

Overview

Archerfield Airport is one of Australia’s most historically significant airports, serving a wide range of aviation, commercial and community stakeholders.

GRZZ partnered with design studio Soundscrawl to redesign and modernise Archerfield Airport’s digital presence, transforming an outdated and difficult-to-manage website into a professional, user-friendly platform that better reflects the organisation and its operations.

The project combined large-scale content restructuring, online form digitisation and interactive storytelling elements to create a significantly improved experience for both users and internal staff.

The Challenge

The existing website contained a substantial amount of operational and informational content, much of which was difficult to navigate and overwhelming for users.

The platform needed to:

  • Improve overall usability and professionalism

  • Better organise large volumes of content

  • Simplify access to operational information and forms

  • Reduce reliance on paper-based processes

  • Support online document handling and digital signing

  • Present Archerfield’s aviation history in a more engaging way

  • Remain responsive and easy to manage internally

A key challenge was presenting complex operational information without making the experience feel cluttered or difficult to navigate.

Our Approach

Working alongside Soundscrawl on the visual direction and user experience, GRZZ handled the technical implementation and development of the platform with a strong focus on content structure, usability and operational efficiency.

To better manage the large volume of information across the site, we implemented a structured accordion-based content system that allows users to progressively reveal information only when needed. This significantly improved readability and reduced visual overload across content-heavy sections.

Key deliverables included:

  • Responsive WordPress development

  • Large-scale content restructuring

  • Accordion-based content systems for improved usability

  • Online form implementation and workflow improvements

  • Digital document signing functionality

  • Interactive historical timeline development

  • Performance and usability optimisation

The project also involved transitioning many existing paper-based forms and manual processes into streamlined online workflows, reducing administration time and improving efficiency for both users and internal teams.

Digitisation & User Experience

One of the most impactful aspects of the project was the digitisation of operational forms and documentation workflows.

By moving physical paperwork online and enabling digital signing functionality, the platform significantly reduced manual handling, improved accessibility and streamlined day-to-day processes.

The website also introduced a large interactive timeline experience showcasing the history of Archerfield Airport, helping bring the organisation’s heritage to life in a more engaging and visually accessible format.

Combined with the broader redesign, the result is a platform that feels far more modern, organised and professional while remaining practical and easy to use.

The Outcome

The final result is a dramatic transformation of Archerfield Airport’s online presence.

The new platform delivers:

  • A significantly more professional digital presence

  • Better organisation of complex information

  • Improved user navigation and accessibility

  • Reduced reliance on manual paperwork

  • Streamlined online workflows and document handling

  • Engaging interactive historical content

  • A scalable platform for future growth and updates

The project demonstrates how thoughtful content architecture, collaborative design and digital workflow improvements can modernise not just a website, but the broader operational experience surrounding it.
